March is a great month for Ewe’s milk cheese, the milk is fresher which means the cheese is tastier. It’s also ideal for a fruity Pinot Noir, for a glimpse into the Springtime freshness. With this in mind, we have chosen the brilliant Berkswell ewe’s milk cheese and the beautiful Bolney Estate Pinot Noir, which pair excellently with one another.
We also have a brand-new seeded rye bread from Sally Clarke’s as our Bread of the Month.
Wine of the month:
Bolney Estate Pinot Noir
The Bolney Estate Pinot Noir is a well-balanced wine with soft tannins. On the palate you will find flavours of juicy sweet strawberries, plums and red cherries. There is a pleasant aroma of leather and toasted almonds. It has an indulgent smooth and creamy finish. Pairs well with lamb with a mint glaze and a side of crisp-tender asparagus.
This wine has won:
Gold in the 2019 Wine GB Awards 2019
Silver in the 2020 International Wine Challenge
Cheese of the Month:
A fine example of British cheese, exclusively using milk from their Friesland ewes. Batches are entirely handmade by their dedicated team of three. Berkswell has a natural rind that is slightly chewy. The texture is firm, dense and a little granular. The flavour is very complex and an enticing sweetness. You can enjoy notes of pineapple and caramel. Try with some Bayley & Sage Quince Puree, some sourdough crispbread and savoury Iberico ham. Best with a good red, such Bolney Estate Pinot Noir.
This cheese has been awarded the following in the 2017 Artisan Cheese Awards:
Supreme Champion; Best Farmhouse Cheese; Best English Cheese; Best Ewe’s Milk Cheese
Why not try having a Creamy Berkswell Rigatoni
Bread of the Month:
Sally Clarke’s Seeded Rye
New from Sally Clarke’s bakery is this German-style wheat-free sourdough. Made with dark and light rye flours, it is dense and packed with sunflower seeds. Delicious toasted with smashed avocado or try a Berkswell toasted sandwich with tomato and bacon.
