Training Manager – Battersea, London, SW11

Are you a talented Training professional looking for an incredible opportunity to join an established, South West London-based food retail business? Bayley & Sage is growing and are recruiting for a dynamic Training Manager to join their team.

About the Role

Reporting into the Head of HR, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of the Training strategy of delivering outstanding customer service and operational excellence.  You will ensure that our teams all have the tools they need to train and develop their staff.  You will be responsible for creating, managing and delivering training initiatives for the whole business.  You will work across all functions to ensure our teams have the best training to reach their potential and lead their teams successfully.  You will ensure that a culture of ongoing training and development is fostered within our company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deliver and embed training programmes in line with our business vision and values, to include competency frameworks, working across all functions of our business
  • Design, deliver and implement Store Manager training and development programmes to support talent into senior roles
  • Design, deliver and implement training for all entry level roles into our operations teams (to include stores, distribution and central production kitchen)
  • Design, deliver and implement training for all support staff and senior employees in the business
  • Work with the Management teams to embed a coaching culture and continuous improvement environment to support ongoing programmes
  • Work with the Head of HR to develop tailored personal development including coaching for the Senior Management team
  • Devise and facilitate useful in-house training and workshops for all teams to support business needs
  • Contribute to HR team projects as required
  • Lead, coach and manage team of training coordinators
  • Facilitate and manage resources such as e-platforms to ensure colleagues are empowered to start their development journey
  • Support with customer and compliance audits

About You

  • You will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a training role, plus some experience of leading an L&D function
  • You will possess previous experience of L&D design and delivery
  • You will have experience within a fast-paced environment, particularly food retail would be preferred
  • You will be able to operate in a constantly changing, hands on role where resilience is a key skill
  • You will have strong communication and influencing skills at all levels to support your decisions and proposed plans
  • You will be a creative thinker with the ability to shape a vision of the future
  • You will be able to design and produce relevant training programmes and materials including e-learning courses
  • You will have excellent technical and computer skills and a sound knowledge of office software packages, including e-platforms. Previous IT/HR systems experience would be desirable
  • You can effectively present information to senior management as well as team members and management
  • You have a keen eye for detail
  • You can solve problems and resolve issues quickly
  • You are analytical and can read data and reports to assess complex information

Technical Manager – SW London

Are you a food scientist with practical experience in food retail and/or manufacturing?  Do you want to join a dynamic company and support our growth with your technical expertise and eye for quality?

Bayley & Sage is growing, and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Manager to join our team based in SW London.

We are retailers of premium fresh food.  We prepare our own range of salads, sandwiches, dips, soups, meal pots and breakfast pots and ready meals in our in-house Production Kitchen.   We currently supply freshly prepared meals and ready to eat items to 8 Bayley & Sage stores with more stores to come in 2021, which will require a more focused approach to quality and technical management in our business. We are also growing our range of own label products procured through our supplier base.

About the role

Reporting to the Commercial Director, the purpose of this role is to manage the day to day food safety of all products through the development, implementation and ongoing management of robust, food safety and quality systems. You will ensure that our sites meet the legal and regulatory requirements as well as customer and industry standards in Food Safety and Quality Management, and to ensure audit-ready standards every day.  You will work together with the Production, Operations, Logistics and Buying teams to ensure due diligence is carried out and we are compliant with all relevant legislation and regulations.  You will act as principal contact for the EHO and all food regulatory matters including HACCP, all external audits and labelling for allergens, and you will lead on the implementation of Natasha’s Law for the business.  You will also be responsible for ensuring that a food safety culture is fostered throughout the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement robust food safety and quality systems, policy and process for the business according to industry standards and in line with current legislation to ensure food safety of all products produced and handled by Bayley & Sage
  • Ensure quality systems, policy and processes are being followed
  • Work together with Buying, Production, Logistics and Operations teams to ensure due diligence is completed for all Bayley & Sage sites and that we stay compliant with all relevant legislation to include production, selling, storing and transportation of food products
  • Update, amend and review all Company HACCP plans in line with FSA and EHO requirements and all relevant legislation. Drive continuous improvement across the estate
  • Create and carry out a robust audit schedule of the CPU, DC and all stores and provide findings and recommendations to relevant Heads of Dept
  • Create a robust product recall procedure and assist in the creation of a microbiological testing schedule
  • Act as principle contact for all EHO and food regulatory matters to include audits
  • Ensure all due diligence is performed on new suppliers and new ingredients
  • Ensure all labelling meets current legal requirements and lead on the implementation of Natasha’s Law for the business
  • Advise on responses to food related customer complaints which have been escalated and lead on investigations

About you

  • You will have a practical approach to technical management supported by a minimum of 2 years ‘on the job’ experience, plus excellent knowledge of industry standard technical processes
  • You will have a food science/food technology background or equivalent
  • Site technical experience in a food manufacturing business would be desirable e.g. RTE, Fresh produce, FMCG, food to go etc as well as a working knowledge of Retail and Food Service technical standards and shelf life extending techniques such as sous vide, MAP and pasteurisation
  • Customer-facing experience working with own-branded, high quality products prepared directly for the customer would be ideal and a background working with NPD would be a great advantage
  • You will have good knowledge of and experience working with HACCP, BRC (desirable) and customer/ retailer audits etc.
  • You will also have retail experience (desirable) and microbiology and analysis experience (desirable)
  • You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as a good understanding of Microsoft packages, in particular working with Office 365 (Excel, SharePoint, PPT)
  • You will ideally be qualified to HACCP and Food Safety Level 4

Handyman – South West London 

Bayley & Sage is growing, and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a handyman to join our team in South West London.

About the role 

As our handyman, you will be responsible for keeping our estate looking fantastic and in tip-top working condition. Our estate includes 9 shops, a production kitchen unit, a distribution warehouse, various offices as well as our central office and other properties. The purpose of this role is to carry out general repairs acting as the main point of contact for all maintenance issues. You will also be responsible for bi-annual fridge maintenance.  This role does involve moving, lifting and bending. Your duties will also include general cleaning where required, sorting and organising storage as well as pick-up and delivery of items around the estate which includes loading and offloading.

Key responsibilities  

  • Minor electrical – rewiring, changing fuses, junction boxes etc.
  • Minor plumbing and carpentry
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Painting and decorating
  • Clearing gutters and roof repairs
  • Changing filters on air conditioning systems
  • Maintaining property exteriors through the different seasons
  • Changing light bulbs and ensuring other fixtures and fittings are in good working order
  • Clearing or cleaning general areas
  • Shifting furniture or equipment
  • Assembling furniture or equipment

About you 

You will be a hard worker, used to rolling your sleeves up and getting on with the job at hand.  You are looking for a long-term position and have a positive, ‘can-do’ attitude. You will be physically capable as heavy lifting as well as moving, bending, and stretching, are involved in the day-to-day role. Ideally, you are an experienced handyman with the ability to multi-task and deal with a fast-paced and constantly changing work environment. You are efficient and organised with the ability to prioritise your own workload effectively. You must have a valid, clean UK driving licence and possess a reasonable level of English language. You will be flexible to work across 7 days as our business is open 7 days a week. Ultimately, you need to demonstrate a great eye for details and problem solving skills providing solutions (short, mid and long term) while maintaining a professional attitude at all times.
